How to care for your knitwear

As colder days are becoming more frequent we find ourselves reaching for warmer layers, in particular adding knitwear to our daily looks. Here at Flo&Frankie, our shopping habits are also reflecting these colder days and we are finding our money going towards purchases of new coats and knits.

You might be noticing these same habits occurring within your outfits or spending, so we thought now would be the perfect time to share our favourite ways to care for your knitwear and ensure these special pieces last for seasons ahead.

CARING FOR YOUR KNITWEAR, STEPS:

GENERAL CARE

Always be careful when dressing by removing all jewellery and other items that may catch on the yarn. The beauty of our favourite knitwear is how delicate these pieces are, so treat them gently.

PILLING

Did you know that pilling on your wool, cashmere and knitwear is not a sign of poor quality or a design fault? Pilling is a natural occurrence of long fibres and happens less and less over a garment's lifetime.

We recommend using an electric de-pillar or wool comb for a quick fix, make sure you are extremely gentle when using these tools.

STORAGE

Wool and cashmere have a natural ability to shed dirt before bacteria can form, meaning that you can wait longer between washes than most other fibres.

When you do decide it is time to wash your knitwear, please follow the instructions below:

Step 1: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of gentle wool detergent.

Step 2: Gently swirl your knitwear around in the water, softly squeezing the suds through the garment. Do this for a couple of minutes.

Step 3: Rinse your knit with cold water until the water runs clear and sud-free.

Step 4: Gently squeeze out all excess water and lay your knitwear flat on a clean bath towel. Roll the towel up with the knitwear inside and squeeze softly drawing the moisture from your knitwear and into the towel. Do not wring or twist.

Step 5: Unroll the towel and lay your knitwear flat on a fresh towel. Leave it to finish air-drying in the shade.

Step 6: Store your knitwear folded on a shelf or draped over a hangar. This will protect the shape and wearability of your garment. Here's an easy to follow video on how to hang your knitwear.
